Online dating is a great way to meet new people, especially if you don't really have the time or inclination for the bar scene. But online dating does come with its drawbacks. Initially you will not know for sure exactly who you are interacting with, and online dating does attract the scammers and spammers who use the system for their own devious agendas. Scammers can typically be divided into two forms. A man posing as a women in order to deceive and ultimately scam you, and a woman who is posing as herself but who will try to get money from you using emotional means. Here we will discuss the best ways to quickly identify the real scammers and avoid wasting your precious time and money.
Nigerian Dating Scammers
Here are ten important pointers to help you identify the West African (often refered to as Nigerian) scammers.
|
|
1/. West African (Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal etc) scammers will often address you as 'dear' when sending messages through chat or Instant Messenger.
2/. Although on their profile they may state they are local to you, they will often begin the conversation by telling you they are working for a company, studying for a degree or visiting relatives and are currently in West Africa.
3/. They will often ask your name almost immediately and suggest you go to Yahoo Messenger to continue your chat. They will use the 'buzz' feature on Yahoo to attract your attention before even messaging you. |
4/. Their photos will look like they are from professional model shots and not natural poses. These photos are almost certainly stolen from somewhere on the web. You may also see rather grainy photos that are thumbnail size.
5/. They never have a webcam. Obviously being seen live would demonstrate that they are nothing like the individual they are trying to copy.
6/. Typical errors in their written English are... they will start a sentence with Am... For example 'Am Ann Smith by name.. am 35 years old..' they will describe themselves as "real, honest, sincere, loving, careing (often spelt like that), genuine". They will also often discribe themselves as god fearing or god fareing.
7/. They will almost certainly try to come across as a saint by claiming to work with disabled people and students, work for a charity such as UNICEF, or even work for the United Nations.
8/. An often-used ploy the scammer will try is telling you about a sick relative who needs financial assistance to pay medical bills.
9/. The West African scammers will talk of love and marriage even in their opening sentences with you, and are often impatient in their efforts to gain your confidence using flattery and adoration as their 'tools of the trade'.
10/. You can often identify a scammer by their username which will typically contain the words 'luv' or 'real' and sometimes have a string of numbers following, or a badly spelt western forename. Examples of this would be: Victorai4real, DanelleLuv458, Christinia4Luv02 etc.
Nigerian dating scams (or romance scam), besides just asking for money for their sick relatives, etc.. will typically involve a scheme like this:
The scammer uploads fake attractive photos of white people. They will pretend to be foreign representatives working in Nigeria but living in the US or Canada, UK or any other European country. After they establish some adoring interaction with you and fall in love with you, they will inform you that their employer has paid them with Money Orders, which cannot be cashed in Nigeria. They will ask to send you the Money Orders to deposit into your bank account and wire them the cash via Western Union, and may even suggest to keep some money for your trouble. Needless to say, a couple of weeks later, your bank inform you that those Money Orders are no good, and the scammer is long gone.
Russian Dating Scammers
Unlike Nigerian dating scammers, there is a lot of information available about Russian scammers on the Internet. Most people have heard about it and know what it's all about. The scammers establish some intimate correspondence, fall in love with you after only a couple of letters then start requesting money, for a variety of purposes.. including a visa and ticket to visit you, for English classes, for a cell phone, Internet connection etc. Once you send her the cash, she is gone. Or maybe she will ask you for more money and then will be gone.
Although there will always be the freelance scammers, Russian dating scammers tend to be run by criminal organizations in the Republic of Mari El, Russia which account for about 90% of all Russian scammers, the remainder originating from Lugansk in the Ukraine. However, Russian girls are not all scammers! Far from it.. But you need to identify the scammers profiles and many of the traites are similar to those of the Nigerian scammers ie profile pics of model shoots, polite messages and lots of talk about love.
You can learn much more about Nigerian and Russian Dating Scams and Scammers by visiting RomanceScam.com - a site dedicated to fighting Nigerian and Russian romance scammers.
So the golden rule of online dating if you want to avoid being scammed?? The moment another member asks you to send gifts or cash, you terminate all connections with that individual and report them to the dating site operator immediately so that they can be removed from the system. Under no circumstances give them any personal information such as your email address or phone number.
Sadly, as with all scams, the scammers only exist because there are still 'victims' who will fall for their sick schemes. Don't allow yourself to become a victim.. Be alert and stay safe in your online dating experiences.
