As we have already mentioned, online dating is a great way to meet new people, and especially so if you don't have the time or lost your appetite for the bar scene. But online dating does come with its drawbacks. Online dating scammers who try to deceive fellow members in the hope of obtaining money through false pretences have been around for many years, but the latest 'plague' to hit online dating sites is the scourge of the online dating spammers.
|
|
Online dating spammers will typically work in those online dating sites that emply features such as chat room and Instant Messenger facilities as they like the one on one contact which gives much less time to think about a reply than internal email.
Although the online dating spammer may still use internal email, unlike the scammers they don't like to upgrade to paying member which is often a necessity in order to use the internal reply system. More often attracted to the free dating sites they will quickly suggest chatting outside of the website at MSN Messenger or Yahoo Messenger.
|
Their agenda is to use their 'captive audience' of members who are obviously interested in the dating scene, and set out to try to use that membership to earn themselves commission often from other affiliate programs.
A Typical Online Dating Spammers Scenario
First they will use a raunchy headline to their profile and often provocative photographs to catch attention. Once they interact with a unsuspecting 'victim' they will suggest moving to MSN or Yahoo Messenger where they feel they are more in control of the victim's attention.
The chat subject will soon become sexual and the spammer will offer to cam, date or even meet for sex on condition that the victim registers at a third-party website first. It is the third-party website that is paying the spammers commission for bringing new members. Once the victim joins the website and registers their membership, the spammer becomes invisible and interaction ceases. The job is done and their commission earned they will waste no time in searching for the next victim.
Although the victim in this case may noy have laid out any money to join the third-party website, he has wasted a great deal of time on an obviously insincere participant in the dating scene.
Some third-party sites will ask for credit card details 'for age verification purposes only'. Be warned that these are unscrupulous websites and your credit card will probably be used illegally. NEVER give out your Credit Card details to verify your age.
A ploy often used by online dating spammers is to give their victim a quick sample of them on their cam as a teaser. This is typically a video of a sexy girl and not necessarily a live cam of the spammer.
So if you want to avoid being a victim of online dating spammers, always be wary of sexually explicit headlines and photographs, and if asked to join another website in order to carry on the interaction, better to end it there and then. Under no circumstances give them any personal information such as your email address or phone number and in particular your credit card details in order to continue a conversationin chat or IM.
Sadly, as with all scams, the spammers continue to exist because there are still 'victims' who will fall for their nuisance schemes. Don't allow yourself to become a victim.. Be alert and stay safe in your online dating experiences.
